TROY — Sean Austin and his fellow students faced a daunting challenge when first going up against the huge guys of the computer applications field.

But that didn’t deter Austin and his colleagues, who currently attend or have graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, from launching their own company, Motalen, Inc., which designs and creates iPhone, Android and Samsung phone applications.

“At first it was kind of a David versus Goliath idea,” stated Austin, a senior at RPI, who co-founded the company in Nov. 2009 with longtime friend Alexander Bringsjord and associates Richmund Fries and Griffin Milsap. “We were just the tiny guy and we had some good ideas, but we were going up against the huge companies that have tens of millions of dollars. But we thought we could have some success with this and people liked what we were doing.”

The endeavor has already made an impact on the rapidly growing application field with much success with its development of an Android phone battery application, which has drawn national recognition.

“Running a business in this industry is not only extremely intense given the high level of saturation in the market, but it’s a day-to-day roller coaster ride,” stated Bringsjord, who grew up in Brunswick and is also an RPI senior.

“We’ve been working for over a year in this business and we have had a great deal of success,” stated Austin, an East Greenbush native who attended Albany Academy with Bringsjord. “We are currently the owners of arguably the top Android battery application on the market.”

The battery app provides the cell phone user with an alternative to gauging the power remaining in the battery, usually implemented with a bar graphic. Instead, the app measures the current percentage of battery power left and then provides time estimates off of that.

“It takes data from your phone and tries to figure out based on your usage and your phone, what your (battery power) estimate should be,” Austin said. “This is exciting, it has over 1.6 million downloads and reached the top 20 for all free tools several months ago.”

Shortly afterwards, the business, which currently includes only five contributors, released a pair of games, first Wave: Pro — an interactive music game application. Continued…

“I’ve been interesting in gaming for a while, since I was like 14 or 15,” stated Milsap, a junior at RPI who designed the Wave: Pro game, which has more than 30,000 downloads. “This wasn’t necessarily a games company when we started, but it’s really great that we can go in this direction.”

Austin and Bringsjord, who grew up in Brunswick and is also an RPI senior, collaborated to create the game application Infernus: Verse 1, a 3-D game which includes “cutting edge graphics and combines this with a mysterious storyline,” according to Austin.

“It’s like a psychological thriller,” Milsap added.

Motalen made its mark in a Global Developer Challenge, winning $40,000 by finishing third with Infernus: Verse 1 in its category. All 24 winners, including the Troy based company, were featured on Samsung’s App website and has received over 200,000 downloads and the game is also available on Android and iPhone as well.

The company has also been successful since it draws on the strengths from each of its contributors, as Austin’s major is computer and science information technology, while Bringsjord’s dual major covers business management and philosophy along with a minor in psychology.

“We have multiple brains focused in the same direction; these team members all comprehend and act according to their roles, seamlessly,” Bringsjord said. “It’s difficult not to state this confidently, given the depth of intellectual knowledge on board, in the form of scientific and engineering expertise.”

“We work with each other’s strengths and talents — and we wanted to do much more than just the battery app,” Austin said.

Business has been so encouraging, that the four have able to travel around the country on business, such as attending the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco as well as to Las Vegas — all on the young company’s dime.

“The future is most definitely bright,” Bringsjord said. “Like in any other business, success will be brought about through adopting the right strategy around high-in-quality products. Since we’ve done this to a massive extent since our founding, and since the feasibility is there for continuing on this path, it seems only to be a matter of time until people know who we are.

“Sean would concur with me that getting into the app industry was and is something we’ll never have regrets about,” Bringsjord said.

“Since apps are so embedded into popular culture, we are local students trying to become the next ideal thing,” Austin concluded.

One of the biggest gripes Android developers have about the ecosystem has been Android Market — it was slow to add support for paid apps internationally, and it’s taken ages for it to support in-app payments. Today, it’s finally fixing the latter issue: Android Market now supports in-app billing.

The news doesn’t come as a big surprise, as Google pre-announced the feature’s impending launch last week so that developers could prepare for it. But it’s still a big deal. In-app purchases have proven to be very lucrative for developers on Apple’s iOS (which launched in-app payments back in 2009). They’re particularly important for free applications, which often entice new users with a price-tag of ‘free’ and then upsell new levels, upgrades, and customizations.

As with application purchases, Android Market charges a fee of 30% for anything sold via in-app billing, which is the industry standard.

Hopefully this will help developers more effectively monetize their applications on Android Market — historically users have been less willing to pay for apps on Android than they have on Apple’s App Store.

Mobile phone applications have become commonplace today, as new and more innovative applications are emerging on a daily basis. A mobile phone has become much more than a phone, as the functionality has widened to include so many more uses. The iPhone app market is therefore marked for around $1 billion in sales, while the Android app sales would generate around $100 million. The Android market has however shown a 500% surge in the number of apps, while the App Store has registered just a 100% increase.

Both the Android and iPhone apps come in a wide variety of uses and functionality. The number of free apps differs substantially, as around 70% of Android apps are free while less than 1/3 of iPhone apps are free to download. Again, compatibility is a factor; while iPhone apps are compatible with all earlier devices, the Android scene is very disorganized. Where market presence is concerned, the iPhone can be bought in 90 countries, while Android devices are available in just 32. The continuing advances in technology, it is difficult to prophesy who would be the ultimate winner in the battle for mobile space in 2011. On current figures, Apple is the champion, but Android is very much in the race.

It’s odd to talk about baseball when part of the country is still getting fresh snow. But yesterday was indeed opening day, which makes it a good time to check in with Bob Bowman, who runs Major League Baseball Advanced Media, the digital business jointly owned by all of pro baseball’s teams.

MLB.com boasts one of the most successful subscription businesses in digital media; last year, the company boast 1.5 million subscribers, and expects that number to hit 2 million this year. So it’s worth listening to Bowman’s take on Apple vs. Android, his company’s recent Facebook experiment, and why mobile advertising is taking off.

Peter Kafka: You’ve complained publicly before about the difficulty in supporting multiple flavors of Android for your apps. But this year you’ve expanded the number of Android handsets you’re supporting from 6 to 11. Did you ever consider not working with Android at all?

Bob Bowman The short answer is no. But what we have done is that we don’t support every Android phone. Because at some point, it’s diminshing returns. The Android user typically is less likely to buy, and therefore the ROI on developing for Android is different than it is for Apple.

Why do you think an Android owner behaves differently than an iPhone owner?

The iPhone and iPad user is interested in buying content – that’s one of the reasons they bought the device. The Android buyer is different.

It’s a great phone – make no mistake about it. But if you really want first rate digital content on a device, your first look will probably be an iPhone. And on the tablet, an iPad.

Do you think you’ll be supporting either the BlackBerry Playbook or HP’s WebOS?

We want them to succeed. We don’t want there to be just one company out there. Obviously there are a lot of customers out there that still use the BlackBerry. So if there’s a tablet out there that they are more comfortable with, vs. the iPad, Hallelujah.

I think we will support the Playbook for sure this season. Blackberry’s been a partner of ours for a long time.

Last month you started streaming spring training games, for free, on Facebook. Did that generate any new business for you, and will you keep doing it?

As a conversion tool, it was de minimus. But that didn’t bother us, because we were using it as a promotional vehicle, to get people excited about baseball. And to see how many people would take time out and watch it. We had tens of thousands each day doing it.

[But] we’re not going to do the embeddable player for the regular season. What we found was during the past few weeks, as many people clicked the link (back to to the MLB.com site) as clicked the embeddable player.

One might think that the embeddable player would get a lot more clicks. But a lot of people are so used to seeing video on a full screen, with full features, that they ended up back here.

You sell subscriptions internationally, and YouTube has been working on its own international sports deals. Is there a way to work with them?

We’re big fans of google. And Claude Ruibal, who’s over there at YouTube and YouTube Sports, we’re big fans of his, too. So we’ve initiated some conversations with them. As yet, unfruitful. But in the end, people do deals, not companies, so we’ll see how it goes.

You’re primarily in the subscription business, but you sell ads, too. How’s that going?

Good. We’ll get 15 to 20 percent of our revenue from sponsorships this year. The most pleasant surprise for 2011 is wireless sponsorship. With all the eyeballs going to mobile — 45, 50 percent of our eyeballs will be mobile this year — you have to execute advertising. Otherwise all you’ve done is trade a dollar for 70 cents.

Where does the 30 cents go?

Because with wireless subscription products — you’re losing 30 percent margin to Apple.

Ah. So you’re selling via Apple’s new in-app subscription rules. But you’ve decided you can live with them?

We’ve been living by them since March 1st. We don’t view them as a dramatic change from where they’ve been in the past. We’re hopeful that over time, the margin will fall from 30 percent, but we don’t know if it will.

But make no mistake about, Appple’s been a great partner. Last I checked, they created the iPhone and the iPad.

Sony Playstation Android 2011-12, Limited To SE Xperia Play

The Sony Ericsson Xperia Play which is a Playstation-certified handset that is running on the Android operating system is getting ready for launch and in preparation, SE is getting their games catalog finalized. As it stands now, the Android market has a number of Playstation 1 (PSX) game titles, but unfortunately, the vast majority of Android devices will not be able to either download or play them.

The Xperia Play is expected to launch shortly within Europe and Verizon will launch their own branded version later this month. In addition to these moves, Sony has also made an effort to clean up the Android market, placing requests that PSX emulators be removed from the market. Although the emulators are not exactly illegal, it does infringe on Sony’s intellectual property and one can not fault them for this move.
